Through Friday night’s first period, pretty much everything seemed to be going Alabama-Huntsville’s way. The Chargers had jumped to a 2-0 lead on WCHA-rival Alaska and headed into the locker room after the first up 2-1.
In front of a season-best crowd of 3,521 and a national television audience, the Chargers seemed in the drivers seat until the wheels fell off the bus. Early in the second period, with UAH on the power play, Alaska’s Josh Atkinson pounced on a puck and took it into the UAH zone and beat Carmine Guerrero. While UAH answered shortly after, Alaska then answered again.
The two teams went into the second intermission tied at 3. Alaska came out in the third period and simply rolled over the Chargers, taking the lead just 11 seconds into the final stanza and never looking back until they had put 6 total goals on Carmine Guerrero in just 29 shots.
The Chargers finished the night just 1-for-6 on the power play with only 5 shots. Alaska scored on 2 of 3, with their only failure coming on a 3 second man-advantage.
The two teams face off again on Saturday night at 7:07pm at the Von Braun Center.
