Vandy Drops “Parent’s Weekend” Series to Indiana

vuhockey_vs_indiana

Vandy lost another weekend series, this time to the visiting Indiana University Hoosiers, in what the Dores called “Parent’s Weekend”. Friday’s game, delayed due to a fender bender IU suffered on the trip to A-Game Sportsplex in Franklin, TN, was a lopsided 8-1 victory by the Hoosiers. Saturday’s game was a much closer game with IU scoring the game winning goal with just 6.8 seconds left in the third period. The Hoosiers won the game 5-4 and took 2-0 record back to Bloomington.

Indiana came out of the locker room just prior to puck drop, but that would not affect them. In less than a minute, they had a 1-0 lead on the Dores. Later in the first, Vandy took the puck into the IU end and appeared to score. Neither of the referees signaled for a goal and there was not a stoppage in play. While the Commodores were celebrating, the visiting Hoosiers took the puck into the Vandy end. Vandy’s defenseman retreated quickly to their zone and prevented another IU goal.

John Longman faces off against Indiana University

The Hoosiers would score three more times in the first on just 15 total shots. Vanderbilt Coach Thomas Bernstein made the decision during the first intermission to give sophomore transfer, Bo Korpman, a shot between the pipes.  The Air Force ROTC cadet allowed four goals on 27 shots during his forty minutes of ice time Friday. Vandy’s lone goal of the game came from freshman defenseman Zach Satin.

Saturday’s game proved to be a much better game to watch. Vandy came out a bit flat in the first, but still put points on the board. Sophomore forward Matthew Neurohr scored a short-handed goal at 15:24. During the second and third periods, the boys in black and gold played a lot better. They had more focus and matched up very well with the experienced Hoosiers.

Bo Korpman was impressive in his first start in the crease Saturday afternoon. He allowed only five goals on 57 shots. Junior forward Daniel Hogue led the team with two goal, while Jack Gibbons added a goal and an assist. Freshman John Longman had two assists on the day.
