A fluke second-period goal credit to Madison Dunn helped the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers tie the WCHA leaders, the Minnesota State University Mavericks, on Friday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
In a game that the home team never trailed, Dunn opened scoring for the Chargers in the first period at 9:22 with the first of his career.. The Mavericks’ Bryce Gervais answered 3 minutes later to tie the game at 1. The teams would head into the first intermission deadlocked.

UAH came out in the second period shorthanded, but just 28 seconds in, captain Brent Fletcher pounced on a loose puck and put the Chargers up 2-1 on a breakaway. However, before the power play came to an end, Minnesota State’s Zach Stepan would beat Alabama-Huntsville’s Matt Larose to tie the game at 2.
Halfway through the period, a delayed penalty was called on UAH defenseman Brandon Parker. Minnesota State goaltender Cole Huggins went to the bench for an extra attacker. In the ensuing play, the puck found its way back into the Minnesota State net before the Chargers touched it. The bizarre goal was credited to Dunn at 10:16 and put the Chargers up 3-2, a lead they held going into the second intermission.

The Chargers would hang onto the lead until the 13:05 mark of the third when Gervais snagged his second goal of the game to tie the game at three. Regulation would end that way and the two teams would hold steady through overtime, as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Chargers goaltender Matt Larose ended the contest with 34 saves on 37 shots. The tie broke a 10-game Chargers losing streak to the Mavericks.
