The Nashville Predators have reassigned reigning AHL MVP Daniel Carr to the Milwaukee Admirals. It was a bit of a surprise to a lot of folks as most didn’t think that he would clear waivers. In addition to reassigning Carr to Milwaukee, the Predators have called up Miikka Salomaki and, for the first time ever, Yakov Trenin. Here’s what you need to know about the newest addition to the Nashville Predators!
Trenin is a Russian born player who was drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2015, 55th overall. With being only four games into the season, Trenin has led the Milwaukee Admirals in points with four goals and one assist. He’s the first Admirals player to score a goal in the first three games of a season since the 2004-2005 season when Timofei Shishkanov did it.
Last season, Trenin was 8th on the Admirals roster with 33 points. With that being said, three of the players ahead of him only spent half of the season with the Milwaukee Admirals. Those three players being Adam Helewka, Cole Schneider, and Laurent Dauphin. Trenin’s 2018-2019 campaign included 14 goals and 19 assists in 74 games. For what it’s worth, he had a +21 +/- rating. Trenin is also an extremely durable player, as only three players appeared in more games last season for the Admirals (Alexandre Carrier, Justin Kirkland, and captain Jarred Tinordi). The season prior, Trenin only appeared in 44 games with the Admirals and scored 5 goals with 11 assists.
In my opinion, Trenin was the most deserving member of the Milwaukee Admirals of a call up. He doesn’t have the star power of Tolvanen or Pitlick, but he has certainly out hustled both of them. From the eye test, he is a hard working player with a lot of creativity with the puck. He’s able to get into tough places and get shots on net. This is in contrast to Tolvanen who is still a bit predictable with his shot location and Pitlick who still seems a bit reluctant to shoot the puck.
It’s predicted that Trenin will make his first start tonight as the Predators take on the Florida Panthers and that he will play leftwing to Nick Bonino with Craig Smith on the rightwing.
