Team USA posted their second shutout win in a row Monday against Team Slovakia who was coming off a win over last years Champion, Team Finland.
The American’s were dominating play throughout the first two periods keeping constant pressure on Slovakia’s goalie Denis Godla. It was the 29th shot on goal that Godla faced that got by him as Sonny Milano surged down the right side and finished with a top-shelf goal to put Team USA up 1-0 with 2:18 remaining in the second period. Dylan Larkin got an assist on the play.
“I just saw him down low, so I figured to throw it up on the net up high and luckily it went in”, said Milano on his second period goal.
Team USA went up 2-0 early in the third period on a shot from the goal line from Larkin who got the assist on the earlier goal. It appeared that Larkin was just trying to center the puck to generate a rebound shot for one of his teammates but the puck got under Godla then squeaked in for the goal.
John Hayden made it 3-0 in the final minute of regulation when his shot beat Godla low on his glove side. Brandon Carlo and Auston Matthews each earned an assist on the goal.
Thatcher Demko faced 17 shots during the match while the American’s put 45 on the net.
Patrik Bacik and Dylan Larkin each earned player of the game awards for their team. Larkin has 3 goals in three games and has earned the player of the game award in the past two games.
Team USA has a day off before the much anticipated match against Team Canada on the 31st at 4:00 PM Eastern. Slovakia plays tomorrow against Team Germany.
