Following last night’s victory in New York, with the Preds beating the Rangers 4-1 behind two Cole Smith goals, thoughts immediately turned to the condition of Cody Glass.
Glass left the game in the 1st period with an undisclosed injury, with his return questionable. Then he was downgraded to “out” later in the game. Today, following practice, the team announced Glass will be out 7 to 10 days with a lower-body injury.
Multiple sources have told Penalty Box Radio that the lower-body injury Glass suffered was a knee injury. Initially there were concerns of a major injury to the knee, but after an MRI, the injury was revealed to be relatively minor.
Knee injuries are certainly worrisome. A major ACL or MCL injury would sideline a player for many weeks and possibly months. But a minor injury to those joints (such as a strain) can be manageable without surgery. Most mild MCL/ACL strains carry a recovery time of 1-2 weeks. The team’s timeline of “7-10 days” would suggest that’s what this is.
One source said all parties are “very thankful” for the result, given how much worse it could have been. Another source confirmed that this play was the moment the injury occurred:
As Glass arrives at the boards to close off the play, he lands on his skates slightly off balance. He bends over after the play and skates away gingerly. He played one more shift after that (about 30 seconds on the power play) and then left the game.
With Glass out, it is unclear if the team will call up a replacement. Michael McCarron can step into the vacant center role; or if they want to move someone like Pärssinen to center, they could put Sammy Fagemo into the lineup. Currently the team has only six defensemen in Nashville (with Luke Schenn still out) so perhaps they call up a seventh defenseman for insurance.
Andrew Brunette indicated they would look at all their options on Saturday ahead of their home matchup with San Jose.
