If you’ve been keeping up with the ongoing saga that is Diamond Sports Group (the company that owns Bally Sports), an important update just dropped.
And it’s great news for Nashville Predators fans.
First, to recap.
Diamond Sports Group recently had to file for bankruptcy last year, due to an over leveraged position in acquiring regional broadcast rights to many NBA, MLB, and NHL teams across the country. The company’s finances were in shambles, leaving the future of the company in doubt.
It also worried many fans who had no idea how they would be able to watch their favorite teams.
Today’s latest update, that Amazon is acquiring a minority stake in Diamond Sports Group, should alleviate any fears.
As part of the deal, Bally Sports broadcasts, including the Nashville Predators, would be available on Amazon Prime. From Yahoo Sports:
Under the terms of the restructuring agreement, Amazon will make a minority investment in Diamond and enter into a commercial arrangement to provide access to Diamond’s content via Prime Video.
Customers will be able to access their local team’s content on Prime Video channels where Diamond has rights. Pricing and availability will be announced at a later date. Regional sports content will also remain available on cable and satellite providers.
Reports are not clear when this change will take place. There are likely other legal hurdles to overcome, so it might not be until next season.
Also of note, Yahoo Sports suggested there could be additional costs associated with accessing Bally Sports programming.
But this is great news for anyone concerned about losing access to Preds game (or any other regional teams they follow). Amazon Prime Video memberships are around $9 per month, a very reasonable cost, especially considering it also grants access to all other video services.
