Opening night for Ravenwood had little to be desired when playing Montgomery Bell Academy. To the surprise of MBA, the Raptors stole the win in the third period with three minutes and thirty seconds left in the game with a goal by assistant captain Joey Friedenberger, giving them a 4-3 victory. The loss was the first in the regular season since MBA fell 3-0 to Brentwood on January 28, 2015.
Head coach Matt Eddinger and Captain Peter Cloud represented Ravenwood Monday night at Ford Ice Center. Coach Eddinger wasn’t sure sure what to expect from MBA with it being the first game of the season.
“We weren’t exactly sure what to expect,” said Eddinger. “We didn’t know exactly what they had coming back. We expected that their team was going to be really solid, which they were.”
For the majority of the game, the strength of both teams was maintained in the neutral zone, each team having to perform above and beyond to pull ahead. Ravenwood remained behind until midway through the third period when freshman Sean Karaman tied the game with seven minutes and fifteen seconds left, giving Ravenwood just enough time to pull ahead.
Karaman received high praise from Coach Eddinger.
“His hands and his hockey awareness are solid enough that he’s going to really be something to watch throughout the year,” said Eddinger on Karaman.
Karaman has high hopes for his future hockey career.
“Boston College is the hope, but it’s a reach,” said Karaman.
Coach Eddinger expects him to contribute to the special teams on the ice throughout the year, giving him more experience and time to grow with skill.
Captain Peter Cloud, having a very stoic press appearance, commented that the key to the next game and the rest of the season would be working on communication skills.
“I’ve never really been much of a goal scorer or a play maker, but I lead by example, I work hard, and that’s just what a leader does,” said Cloud. “We had a couple missed cues out there that turned into turnovers which later turned into goals.”
Ravenwood fought hard to take home the win on Monday night with more wins to be expected later in the year.
“Our organization cares more about what happens after the regular season wins, so we like to think that maybe it’s the first regular season win, but we’ve had more important wins against them in the past that have gone down,” said Eddinger following the game.
Ravenwood plans on playing and following through strong for the rest of the season and on to and through the post season. The Raptors play Father Ryan on October 25th at Ford Ice Center.
