“There’s no tradeoff for speed.”
Hendersonville-Station Camp coach Tim Rathert’s words after his team’s 11-1 rout of Blackman-Stewart’s Creek hold some truth to them. The Sumner County-based team certainly showed off some flare on the ice, controlling the tempo of the game and never looking like they were in danger of letting Blackman-Stewart’s Creek into the game.
But despite the route for his team’s first win and two points of the season, Rathert still believes there’s much work to be done.
“I thought it was sloppy. We haven’t skated in about two weeks,” said Rathert, who had to watch the game from afar due to being suspended this game from a brawl that occurred during last season’s Mielnik Cup final.
“But we’ve got guys that can put it in the net, and they did a good job of that tonight. I did not see anything we’ve practiced happen in any of the zones.”
Alexander Yarger and Blake Fuqua were the stars of the night for Hendersonville-Station Camp, each tallying a hat trick. Yarger also dished out three assists. Tyler Kimbro put the puck in the back of the net twice, while Ben Conklin, Evan Rench, and Owen Garner each got on the scorers sheet as well. Jeffery Stanton scored the lone goal for Blackman-Stewart’s Creek.
Blackman-Stewart’s Creek surrendered seven first period goals, including two on the power play. Blackman-Stewart’s Creek coach Jeff Stanton believes his team needs to work on defending the goal
moving forward.
“We’ve to work on our defense and positioning,” said Stanton.
“Our guys were going too low chasing the puck. Nobody was going on positioning. We’ve got to work on that.”
Blackman-Stewart’s Creek will play again next Wednesday against Brentwood at the Centennial Sportsplex. Hendersonville-Station Camp have an early bye,
which Rathert will use to help his team improve.
“We have a lot of improvement in all three phases of the game. We scored goals? Great. I love it for the kids when we can win, but our execution has to get better,” said Rathert.
