Griffins Top Admirals 2-1 in Shootout

The Admirals are making small strides to break their five game losing streak. Pontus Aberg’s lone goal helped lead the Ads throughout most of the game however, the Griffins ultimately won 2-1 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon.

“We played hard. We played good. We played right. We just didn’t catch a break there at the end,” said head coach Dean Evason.

The Admirals took an early lead at 12:36 of the first period. Aberg got the puck on a breakaway, faked the shot on the near dot, and got one past Jared Coreau.

Both Magnus Hellberg and Coreau stood strong throughout the entire second period, Admirals holding their 1-0 lead.

Teemu Pulkkinen tied the game 1-1 for the Griffins with 49 seconds left in the third. Mitch Callahan and Pulkkinen both jammed at it and it went in.

Neither team could find the back of the net in overtime, sending the game to a shootout.

Patrick Cehlin was the only Admiral to score in the shootout. Andy Miele and Callahan each scored for the Griffins giving them the 2-1 victory.

“We’ll use this as a step forward and put a positive spin on it for sure,” said Evason.

The Ads are not letting the streak weigh down on them.

“We know we can play good. We just have to get back to where we started the season and go from there,” said Aberg.

“I think we did a lot of positive things tonight that we can build off from. This was a step in the right direction for sure,” said Hellberg.

The Admirals will take on the Rockford Icehogs once more in game four of their season-long five-game home stand on Wednesday, December 10th at 7pm.
