Going Bald For A Great Cause

Going Bald For A Great Cause

Here at Penalty Box Radio, we love hockey.  That is no secret, but, it’s also not a secret that we love giving back and helping others whenever possible. Throughout the year we team up to raise money through Movember, Autism Speaks and more.

As many folks know, last year on February 14, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. He spent much of the last year in chemotherapy and I am proud to announce he is cancer free. Going through that was rough, and something I wish no family had to deal with. I look at my son who will be 6 this month, and I cannot imagine the pain and suffering a family must go through when a child is diagnosed with cancer.  The average age of diagnosis also happens to be six years old, so it really has me thinking how to help even more.

I am pleased to announce for the third year in a row I will be participating in the St. Baldrick’s “Bald in the Boro” event.   On March 14, 2014, I will be shaving my head to honor children fighting cancer. I will also be raising money towards childhood cancer research.   This year, I will be teaming up with local businesses.  Throughout the days and weeks leading up to the 14th, businesses will be sponsoring time slots to match donations.  Make sure you are following me on twitter (@bigbenpreds) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/bigbenpreds) to see when these businesses will be matching.  Together we can make a difference and raise money for a great cause.

There are several ways YOU can help.

1)    JOIN MY TEAM.

You can join my team: “Putting cancer, in the penalty box”   Simply go to http://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/PenaltyBox and you will see a link to “Join us”  You can begin raising funds, learn more about St. Baldrick’s, and if you are brave enough, sign up to shave your head. (Not required).

2)    Donate.

You can visit the team page above, or my personal page http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/bigbenpreds to donate.

3)    Spread the word.

I know times are rough for everyone, and donating may not be something that is an option for you. If you can tweet, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, MySpace, WHATEVER, just help spread the word, I would really appreciate it.

4)    Match funds:

I am still looking for sponsors to match for hour or daily increments.  If you know of an individual or business who would like more information on matching funds email bigbenpreds at gmail.com and I will get back with you.

5)    Come out on March 14!

This year’s event will be held at Lanes, Trains, and Automobiles in Murfreesboro, TN.  You can you come out and cheer on all the participants and meet some of the children involved, and you can also enjoy bumper cars, bowling, laser tag, and more.

This year, 175,000 kids will be diagnosed with cancer. Currently, childhood cancers only receive 4% of federal funding. The money we raise funds the world’s best research to help these kids.
