Entering July 1st free agency day, the Nashville Predators had two more restricted free agents to take care of: Cody Glass and Alex Carrier.
Now we know one of those players will remain in Nashville the next two years.
Cody Glass has signed a two-year, $5 million deal with Nashville, keeping him with the Preds through at least the 2024-25 season. Upon expiration of that contract, he will remain an restricted free agent, giving the Preds at least one more chance to sign a team friendly deal with Glass.
This is big news for the youth movement in the organization. Combined with today’s news that the Preds signed Ryan O’Reilly and Gustav Nyquist to multi-year deals, shows a commitment to keeping Glass at the NHL level, while also giving him some veteran forwards to learn from.
Glass should slide into a 2nd line center role behind Ryan O’Reilly. Last year, Glass had assumed the top line role with Filip Forsberg and Matt Duchene, mostly because of the team’s injury situation. Now, with Duchene bought out and Ryan Johansen in Colorado, Glass will have a modified role and presumably new linemates.
By the way, Cody Glass is the only remaining player from the “Ryan Ellis deal” that is still playing at the NHL level: Nolan Patrick was recently not qualified by Vegas, Philippe Myers is in the AHL, and Ryan Ellis may never recover from a disastrous injury that has kept him out of the NHL the last two years.
