Post game reaction from head coach Mike Corbett, defenseman Frank Misuraca, and forward Jack Prince
The University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers snapped an 11-game skid on Saturday night, defeating the Colorado College Tigers at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
Junior goaltender Matt Larose – who also had the Chargers’ last win on October 31 – made 36 saves on 37 shots to earn his first ever win at home. Opposing freshman netminder Jacob Nehama – Friday’s winner – saved 31 of 33 in the loss.
Colorado College took the initial lead just 19 seconds into the second period when a Teemu Kivihalme shot was redirected into the goal by Sam Rothstein. Colorado College held the lead until the Chargers’ first power play of the game.
At 8:39 of the second period, UAH’s Jack Prince took a shot from the blue line which was tipped in near the goal by Adam Wilcox. It was Wilcox’s second goal of the weekend.
With 4:35 remaining in the second, Alabama-Huntsville found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-minute penalty kill when freshman Hans Gorowsky went off for a major and a game misconduct for cross-checking. The Chargers prevailed through the penalty kill, however, and at 2:56 of the third period, Richard Buri put the eventual game-winner past Nehama to give the Chargers the 2-1 lead.
UAH finished the night 1-for-2 on the power play, while killing off 5 Colorado College power plays.
In addition to being UAH’s first win since October 31, it was the first home win since the second game of the season against Connecticut.
The Chargers have next week off for Christmas break before heading to #2 North Dakota on New Year’s Day for their final non-conference matchup of the season. UAH will be back in action at the Von Braun Center on January 8 in a WCHA matchup against Alaska.
