Late Heroics Earn UAH Tie Against Minnesota State

For the second night in a row, the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers walked away with a tie against the WCHA’s leading team, the Minnesota State Mavericks. On Saturday night, the Chargers waited until almost the last possible moment to pull even with the Mavericks and walk away with a point.

The teams battled each other to a scoreless tie until midway through the second period when Minnesota State’s C.J. Franklin opened scoring with a power play tally at 6:20. The Mavericks would carry that edge into the second intermission.

Everything seemed to be going the Mavericks’ way. They had no troubles getting shots to the net, registering 50 on the night, and held UAH to just 20. With Chargers freshman Kurt Gosselin going to the penalty box with 1:44 remaining in the game, it seemed that it would end with a 1-0 Minnesota State win.

It would not be.

With just 1:03 remaining in regulation, Chargers forward Matt Salhany found himself on the receiving end of a shorthanded breakaway and beat Minnesota State’s Cole Huggins to tie the game.

The Chargers held on through overtime to earn their second straight tie and second point of the weekend. Goaltender Matt Larose was named the game’s first star on the back of his 49 save performance.
