With the 2013 NHL Entry Draft just a few days away, we complete our scouting report series with International Scouting Services (ISS Hockey) by looking at Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds defenseman, Darnell Nurse. Nurse was the only player to skate in all 68 games for the Greyhounds this past season where he amassed 12 goals and 29 assists. At 6’5″ and 192lbs, Nurse has some bulk to gain, but when he fills out, he is easily prospected to be a top 4 defenseman. Penalty Box Radio: Briefly describe what makes Nurse’s skill-set unique from others in the draft.
Dennis MacInnis: Size, speed and a rough and tumble style. Slightly less offensive than Jones, but more physical.
PBR: What three teams that did not make the playoffs could benefit most from drafting Nurse and why?
DM: Nashville – Similar to Shea Weber, could fill holes and re-balance Preds back-end to being one of the most feared in the league.
Edmonton – Versatile defender who can play with their quick young forwards and eventually help police against teams who try to push them around.
Philadelphia – A big rough defender with some offensive upside, that has Philly’s dream written all over it.
PBR: What current NHL player would Darnell Nurse be similar to once he reaches his prime?
DM: Somewhere between Shea Weber and Brent Seabrook.
PBR: What ability does he have that would strike fear in to opponents?
DM: He’s ferocious and relentless.
PBR: Can you see Nurse playing immediately in the 2013-2014 NHL season?
DM: No
